Making sense of it
/In the original series Star Trek episode “The Ultimate Computer”, a brilliant computer scientist inserts “engrams” from his own brain into the circuitry of his most advanced computer, M5. It is intended to replace most humans aboard a starship, including the captain. An experimental mission using M5 fails in disaster.
Mr. Spock summarizes the experience while (of course) simultaneously insulting Dr. McCoy.
At some point everyone is faced with finding their way through and past the stress, moods, negative thoughts and feelings, anger, frustration, fear, and unhappiness, that is limiting their performance in their work and in life in general. And geeky people like me want to make sense of what’s going on and what to do about it. To understand how human behavior – their own and others' – works.
Practices and methods and frameworks and bodies of knowledge like Energy Leadership™ and Positive Intelligence® and psychology and neurology and Buddhism (really!) are helpful in making sense of behavior.
However, I’ve learned that:
No single model works in every situation.
Models are not intended to be perfect, just practical.
Everyone’s interpretation of a model will be different than yours.
It’s much more complicated than you or anyone thinks.
Try and take the parts of models that work for you.
You must move past intellectualizing into actual practice.
Start with awareness.
Make sense of yourself, and others, and life, in whatever way works for you, by practicing and learning and evolving your way.
I don’t know where I’m going but I’m on my way.
My approach to leadership coaching is focused on leadership attitude, mindset and energy. I coach Positive Intelligence® and Energy Leadership™ and practices contributing to being happier, including self-discovery, awareness, non-judgment, acceptance, and compassion, especially for experienced and senior high tech leaders.
If you are feeling inspired to build, reestablish, or further develop these and other leadership practices, check out my Energy and Mindset Reboot Program, and find out what it can do for you in a free 30-minute Saboteur Discovery Session.
